It’s almost time for State of Origin Game 1 and what once looked like another surefire win for the NSW Blues seems less certain with a resurgent Queensland side – whatever happens we’re just hours away find out. The 2022 State of Origin series kicks off tonight at 8:10pm AEST in Sydney, Australia. So you can watch a live stream between New South Wales and Queensland anywhere in the world.
Tonight’s game marks the first time that former Melbourne Storm and Queensland player Billy Slater will coach the Maroons. He will be joined by rugby legends Cameron Smith and Johnathan Thurston as assistant coaches, and Josh Hannay.
Added to this is the loss of key players Tom Trbojevic and Latrell Mitchell. Trbojevic is out with a shoulder injury while Mitchell was ruled out of Game 1 with a hamstring injury – he now looks doubtful for Game 2 after a positive Covid-19 test.
Her absence comes as a real blow to the NSW side, especially given Queensland’s line-up. Daly Cherry-Evans returns as captain of the side with a defensive line-up of Kalyn Ponga, Xavier Coates and Cameron Munster. Making his debut for the Maroons tonight is Broncos winger Selwyn Cobbo, who has had an excellent sophomore season in the NRL this year.
It all looks like trouble for the Blues but the NSW side still have undeniable power in their own lineup. Blues coach Brad Fittler has called up seven Penrith Panthers players, with a backline including Nathan Cleary, Jarome Luai and Brian To’o. Fancy the start of the series? Here’s how to watch State of Origin Game 1 live, no matter where you are.
