Hello and welcome to everyone on Black Friday! Here we go then. The months of construction are over. England vs USA is here. Gareth Southgate has called up an unchanged team for the first time in 53 games. Gregg Berhalter made a change, with Haji Wright coming on top for Josh Sargent. All the talking is done. Let the action begin.

Major storylines, players to watch closely

Berhalter is under pressure to start the likes of Brenden Aaronson and Gio Reyna (who didn’t feature at all against Wales despite being 100 per cent fit) as the USMNT need to do more with winning the ball high up on the pitch. They did that again and again against Wales and should have been a couple of goals up before the Welsh made a tactical change that Berhalter didn’t react to well. Getting Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah to come together in the final third will be crucial and USA will need to hold the ball better than they did against Wales if they are to get anything out of this game. However, USA defeated England at the 1950 World Cup in one of the biggest shocks in history, and they drew 1-1 in 2010, the last time they met at that tournament. Gregg Berhalter has confirmed McKennie and Dest are both “okay” and that Reyna’s miss against Wales was a “coaching decision” and he is available for one game against England.

The Three Lions were irresistible in attack against Iran and Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane were such a good match. However, there were concerns about an injury surrounding Kane as he had a scan on an ankle prior to this clash, but he is playable. Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice excelled in central midfield but England looked a bit shaky at center back in the second half. The fact that England were able to get Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford off the bench in attack is a testament to the strength of their squad. Harry Maguire is also fit, as is Kyle Walker after missing the last few months through injury.

England vs. USA head to head

  • This is the 12th all-time meeting between the USA and England. USA are 2-8-1 overall (WLD)
  • It is the third meeting of these teams at the FIFA World Cup
  • USA achieved a famous victory in 1950, drawing against England in the group stage of the 2010 World Cup

Gareth Southgate confirms Harry Kane’s fitness ahead of USA

“Harry is fine. He’s been working a bit apart from the group but all good for Friday night,” Southgate said. “He had a scan [on Wednesday] to make sure everything is ok.”

“We have to make sure we’re back in the psychological place we were at the start because States are going to be an athletic team, pressing really well, organized and well trained. They have some players that we know from the Premier League and they showed their best side against Wales in the first half,” added Southgate.

Gregg Berhalter on Southgate, Premier League power, Golden Generation Day

“Every Saturday morning Americans watch the league and then they watch all the fan festivals, it’s an incredible league. We are really proud that our players play there. For me, it’s similarly dominant to the NFL,” added Berhalter.
